Crude oil has limited practical value until it is processed into products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, heating oil, and petrochemical feedstocks. Refining capacity determines how quickly that conversion can occur, where it can happen, and which grades of crude can be handled profitably.
For commodities trading, this creates a market that cannot be understood from crude supply alone. Oil inventories may be plentiful while gasoline remains tight because refineries are operating near their limits, undergoing maintenance, or unable to produce the product mix demanded by the season.
Capacity Is More Than a Nameplate Number
A refinery’s stated capacity describes the volume it was designed to process, not the amount it produces every day. Actual throughput depends on maintenance, equipment failures, feedstock availability, environmental restrictions, economics, and the complexity of the facility.
Utilisation rates provide a better view of how intensively the system is running. When rates are high, the market may receive more fuel, but there is less spare capacity available if another plant fails. A system operating close to its limit can appear comfortable right before one outage creates a sharp shortage.
Not all capacity is interchangeable. A simple refinery may struggle with heavy, high-sulphur crude, while a complex facility can process cheaper grades and remove more impurities. Losing a sophisticated plant can disrupt certain crude flows and refined products even when another refinery has unused capacity.
Geography matters too. Fuel produced on one coast cannot always reach a shortage area quickly because pipelines, ports, product specifications, and shipping rules create bottlenecks. Global supply can look adequate while a regional market becomes extremely tight.
Crude and Fuel Prices Can Move in Opposite Ways
The relationship between crude oil and refined products is often monitored through processing margins, commonly called crack spreads. A widening margin suggests that gasoline or diesel prices are rising relative to crude, giving refiners a stronger incentive to increase throughput where possible.
Counterintuitively, a refinery outage can push fuel prices higher while placing downward pressure on nearby crude. The refinery buys less feedstock when it is offline, reducing immediate demand for oil. At the same time, it produces less gasoline and diesel, tightening product supply.
The same disruption creates two different markets.
Beginners often see rising gasoline prices and assume crude must rise by the same amount. Experienced traders examine which part of the supply chain is constrained. If crude tanks are filling while product inventories fall, the bottleneck sits inside the refinery system rather than at the oil field.
This distinction becomes especially important during seasonal maintenance. Refineries commonly reduce operations before periods of stronger summer gasoline demand or winter distillate demand. Planned work can be absorbed when inventories are healthy. Delays in restarting units can change the balance quickly.
An Outage Can Reprice the Product Curve
Consider a major Gulf Coast refinery shutting unexpectedly during a period of strong summer driving demand. Gasoline inventories are already below their recent average, and several nearby facilities are running at high utilisation.
Gasoline futures break above resistance as traders anticipate fewer barrels reaching regional markets. Crack spreads widen. Crude oil initially holds firm because the broader supply picture has not changed, but local crude differentials weaken as the offline refinery stops buying its usual feedstock.
The first reaction can attract momentum buyers. Hours later, reports suggest that the affected unit may restart sooner than feared. Gasoline gives back part of the breakout, trapping traders who treated the shutdown as an open-ended shortage rather than a disruption with an uncertain duration.
The outage was real. The market had overestimated its length.
A similar pattern appears around hurricanes. Refineries may close before a storm, lifting fuel prices, while offshore production is also shut and supports crude. Once damage assessments arrive, the two sides can separate. Production may recover quickly while refinery restarts take longer, or the reverse may occur.
For practical commodities trading preparation, monitor refinery utilisation, planned maintenance schedules, unplanned outages, crude and product inventories, crack spreads, and regional price differences. Weekly headline inventory changes are only the starting point.
When a disruption occurs, identify whether it affects crude production, refining, pipelines, ports, or final demand. Then ask how long the constraint is likely to last and which contract reflects it most directly. If gasoline is tight but crude stocks are building, a broad bullish view on the entire energy complex misses the actual bottleneck. Trade size and targets should reflect the duration of the outage, not the drama of the first headline.
